│ What is NewsBin and What Can it Do for Me? │
│ │
│ NewsBin is a tool to help you find cool stuff in Newsgroups which │
│ are located on Usenet. For a good description of Usenet, read this │
│ article from ZDNET, ICS, or this article. Basically, Usenet is │
│ a worldwide message board where people can discuss certain topics, │
│ and upload Music, Pictures, Movies, and other binaries (file │
│ attachments that are computer readable, not human readable), for │
│ free. │
│ Almost every ISP provides access to a News Server which is a computer │
│ on the internet that stores articles that people post to Usenet, by │
│ Newsgroup. News servers are maintained differently, some keeping a │
│ week's worth of information and some only keeping a few days. Also,
│
│ not all news servers carry all the Newsgroups. There are over │
│ 60,000 news groups out there now and most servers carry about
42,000. │
│ Any article posted to a public newsgroup on any news server gets │
│ propagated to all the other news servers on the internet. If your │
│ ISP does not offer a news server, you can sign up for a pay service. │
│ We recommend UsenetServer. They do not bandwidth limit and they │
│ allow up to 10 simultaneous connections. They also carry a very
│
│ complete set of newsgroups to choose from. Their standard account │
│ is $10/month and considering the content and the speed, we think it
│
│ is well worth it. Another alternative is to look for public news │
│ servers that pop up. You can find those using some of the links on │
│ our Open News Server page.If you are in Europe, you may have better │
│ luck with Usenet-X which is based in the UK. News server names are │
│ usually the ISP's name with the word "news" in front. For ex
;ample, │
│ earthlink's news server is news.earthlink.net.
│
│ │
│ The music, pictures, and movies are stored as attachments to articles │
│ posted by people in specific newsgroups. These attachments are │
│ called "Binaries" because they are not human-readable text, they
are │
│ files stored in a special format depending on the type of content │
│ they contain. For example, images are usually stored in a compressed
│
│ format called JPEG (or .jpg file extension). Movies are stored in an
│
│ AVI or MPEG (.avi or .mpg file extension) format which are also
│
│ compressed. The latest thing, MP3's, are a compressed format that
│
│ music is stored in. To manually extract these binaries from a
│
│ newsgroup is a complicated process. You can't just download the
│
│ attachment to your computer and see (or hear) the result. Binaries │
│ are stored in an ASCII representation(called uuencoded) on the news │
│ servers. To retrieve a binary, you have to first download it, run a │
│ uudecode program on it, and then use your browser or multimedia │
│ player to see or hear it. To further complicate things, the larger │
│ binaries, such as Music and Movies, are usually split up across │
│ multiple messages. There could be 10, 20, or hundreds of separa
te │
│ pieces to download and put back together. │
│ │
│ So where does NewsBin come in? NewsBin does all this automatically │
│ for you. NewsBin will scan newsgroups that you specify for binary │
│ attachments and will download and decode these attachments for you. │
│ You can then use a picture viewer or a multimedia player to view or │
│ play the content you downloaded. │
│ │
│ Finding the right newsgroups containing content you are interested │
│ in is sometimes tricky. Most of the group names are obvious i.e. │
│ alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1990s will have music from the 1&
#57;90's. But │
│ did you know that an obscure group like alt.fan.oksana-bayul is │
│ loaded with hard-core pornography? Sure there are plenty of obvious │
│ porn groups like alt.binaries.erotica but it is always interesting │
│ to find the hidden groups that people are using to share stuff. │
│ │
│ To find newsgroups that may have something of interest for you, │
│ download NewsBin, install it on your computer, connect to the │
│ internet, tell NewsBin the name of your news server, and go to the │
│ "Groups" tab on NewsBin. NewsBin can download the names of all the
│
│ newsgroups that your news server stores. When all the groups are │
│ downloaded, NewsBin shows you all the newsgroups containing the word │
│ "binaries" by default. You can further search on specified words,
│
│ such as "cars" and NewsBin will list only the newsgroups with the
│
│ word "cars" in it. You can then select which groups you want NewsBin
│
│ to scan for binaries. If you are interested in music MP3's, type in
│
│ MP3 and NewsBin will show you all the newsgroups devoted to music MP3 │
│ files. For more information on how to use NewsBin, view the help │
│ file or our online help. │
